The
Coastal Trail Project is underway! It is a State-mandated project
to map the California Coastal Trail--where it is and where it isn’t--and
to make a plan for its completion.
The
Project is a joint undertaking of the California
Coastal Commission, Department of
Parks and Recreation, State
Coastal Conservancy, and Coastwalk,
with the Coastal Conservancy taking the lead role.
Its
immediate goal is to submit a report to the State Legislature by January
2003; a draft must be complete by fall, 2002. This report is required by
SB908
passed by the legislature in 2001.
Its
long-term goal is to see that the Coastal Trail is completed and maintained.
As
the project is organized, the Conservancy will gather map information from
coastal communities and agencies, and Commission staff will prepare maps
using a digital-mapping system.State
Parks will provide maps of the Coastal Trail as it exists in State Parks,
and advice on trail standards and signage.
Coastwalk’s
part of the Coastal Trail Project has two main components:
Mapping--
Coastwalk
will gather preliminary trail information, then field-check and verify
the maps produced by the Commission. We will need at least 100 “walking”
volunteers, organized by county, up and down the state for this mainly
March to September effort. Visit the Coastwalk website for more information
on volunteer activities and training (see contact information below).
Advocacy and education--
Coastwalk will provide outreach for the Coastal Trail Project. Its volunteers will inform the public about the project and serve as advocates for its completion. Coastwalk will also develop a program for trail identification and signing.
We
would like to hear from you if you have comments about the Coastal Trail
Project or would like to volunteer. If
